Training Programme Placements

There are currently 10 different combinations of placements over the first 2 years of training. These are known as Tracks. Successful candidates express a preference for the Track they would like to do. These requests will be accommodated if possible. In year 2 of GP training Trainees undertake what are known as GP Plus posts (LTFT Trainees see* below). These posts allow Trainees to gain early experience of working in a GP Practice whilst at the same time being based for part of the working week in a hospital or community specialty placement. The Tracks lead into a GP Practice for the 3rd Year where Training is completed under the supervision of a GP Trainer. All the placements in years 1 and 2 are 6 months long. Year 3 is a year long placement. Trainees can apply to do Less Than Full Time training. This means that the total duration of training is adjusted accordingly.

THE TRACK AND PRACTICE PLACEMENT ALLOCATION PROCESS

  • Trainees are sent a list of Tracks and a list of  GP Practices
  • Trainees are asked to provide their preferences to the TPD
  • The Trainee who has ranked the highest in the recruitment process is given their first choices and the remaining Tracks and Practices are allocated in a similar way

  • * HENW does not currently educationally approve LTFT GP Plus Posts. The placement has to be fully based in General Practice
